About the Saints
The Saints marked their 50th year of rugby during the 2008 season. The club was established in 1958 and continues to build its rugby and social profile to the benefit of its members and guests.Going into 2009, the Men Premier Division Saints are the defending Alberta Cup Provincial Champions and the Women Saints are the defending Division 1 Provincial Champions. In addition, the Men’s Second Division Saints were strong play-ff contenders, reaching the City Semi-Final.
The Saints operate 7 teams in their program with first through thirds in the men's section and first and second teams in the women's section. The old boys’ side is very active with several exhibition matches each year. The Junior programs concentrate on weekly clinics and controlled scrimmages on Saturdays throughout the season. The Saints play under the guidelines of the Alberta Rugby Union (ARU) and its sub-union, the Calgary Rugby Union (CRU). Within the ARU and the CRU there are currently 25 clubs and 9 clubs represented respectively. Have a look at the Junior Rugby page for more information. Members of the club are also actively involved in High School rugby. In 2009, there are more than 10 Saints coaching various girls and boys teams throughout the city.
The club will continue its commitment to the hiring of top quality coaches in order to attract the finest athletes while providing those players with the best in rugby instruction. The Saints host visiting players from a variety of countries to enhance our rugby program and social offering. In order to further promote our players, the Saints have endeavoured to build a scholarship fund to assist our playing students with their tuition. The John Falconer Memorial Scholarship was officially established in 1998 with the intention of establishing a sufficient asset base to assist in the academic endeavours of our playing members over the long term.
